Factors that determine the types of volcanic eruptions: The amount of the dissolved gases in the magma. It is a vent or opening at the surface of the earth through which molten material and all other materials are ejected. The material comes from beneath the earth"s surface. Material includes ash, rock and poisonous gases. When molten rock is below the earth"s surface it is called magma. When the molten rock emerges out of the vent onto the surface it is called lava. Not all volcanoes are explosive with violent explosions. These are hot gases infused with incandescent ash and larger rock fragments.
