Leading cause of injury for american women ages 15-44. 1 in 4 women assaulted by domestic partner in life time. 1/3 of women report being abused by a husband/boyfriend. Abuse only happens to minorities and lower ses families. Women are masochistic and achieve unconscious satisfaction from being beaten. Battering is caused by alcohol and drug abuse. Latinos: immigration concerns re: reporting, isolation, machismo males assert male privilege over women, familismo female desire to maintain family at all costs. African americans: isolation from outside community, fear of perpetuation of societal feelings of racism, mistrust of legal system. Asian americans: fear of bringing shame on family and being ostracized by community. Physical abuse: damage to tissue or bones inflicted by other than accidental means, infant whiplash syndrome/shaken baby syndrome. General neglect: parents fail to provide for minor"s basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, medical care, etc. )
