FMSC 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Individualism, Stairlift, Dementia
Document Summary
Health transitions: as society moves to higher socioeconomic status, shift in health status occurs. Shift from family based economy (economic activity in family; nurturing) to family wage economy (economic activity outside of family; less nurturing) and now shift back to nurturing. Emotional support through horizontal ties (connection with people of same generation) Aging in place: allowing for transition to aging without moving (installing stair lift, hiring cna) Depends on individual behaviors and personality, access to care, safe environment, family and support. Even post industrialization, in most countries 3 generation households are the norm, regardless of class. Also, the family takes care of its elders. Screening: testing for diseases, that are usually severe, common, and treatable, based on evidence that members of a population are at risk for that disease (hiv, cancer) Waste of time/resources that need to be allocated for people who require screening. If people are being tested, then treatment must be provided (ethics!)
