Diversity or variety of plants, animals, and other living things in a particular region or area. Filtration of pollutants--oysters filter for the chesapeake bay. Unknown potential--we don"t know about a lot of species on the earth. Value in their own right? (their intrinsic value) Act does not care why, if they are listed it means something is happening to them. Passed in 1973 with strong bipartisan support-almost unanimously. One of the strongest environmental laws ever passed. When passed, not much thought on the effects on humans and private property. Today--lightning rod for property rights advocates and holders of resource entitlements. No idea or awareness of potential economic impacts. Species have been rendered extinct as a consequence of economic. Species are of esthetic, ecological, educational, historical, recreational, growth and development and scientific value . To provide a means whereby ecosystems upon which endangered species and threatened species depend may be preserved .
