High/low level radioactive waste - spent fuel rods at nuclear reactors military waste. Hanford washington has a large site and is now a superfund. Yucca mountain was going to be a waste disposal site but nevada didn"t want it there. Nuclear waste policy act (nwpa) of 1982 - process for permanent disposal. 1987 nwpa amended to require disposal at yucca mountain. 1987-2007 - delays and problems at yucca (nimby) 2010 - obama backs away from yucca. Maybe to appease senate majority leader reid from nevada. 2017 - trump and some republicans want to fund yucca. 2018 - no money in the approved budget for restarting permit process for yucca. Social and political opposition , funding, transportation, law/policy framework. Adaptation - saying that this is happening and what should we do to adapt. International, other countries, us, state, local, community - umd. Electricity generation and transportation have the highest emissions in the us.
