ENCE 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Coastal Erosion, Alluvium, Building Material
Document Summary
Earth = necessities for life but also hazards. Cee and infrastructure have to help provide for needs and protect from hazards. Basic human needs: air, water, food, shelter, sanitation, education, health care. Cee design, build, maintain infrastructure to meet these basic needs. Hazards: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, cyclonic storms, flood, drought, coastal erosion, disease, infestation. Cee design, build, maintain infrastructure to protect society from harm. Ex: in manhattan, the size of the skyscrapers depends on the rocks beneath that are available to put foundations. Bridge foundation scour: river flooding can wash soil away from bridge foundation. Topography: map of surface of earth, elevations. Ex: building a bridge across a canyon is safer because its a flat road vs changing elevations, hills etc. Watershed: all the land that drains (contributes runoff) to a specified point. Pollutants etc on land will end up in water sources.
