Memes are ultimately the genes of culture. A cultural idea or behavior which can be replicated: manifestation: the aspects of a much larger or abstract idea, behavior/action: must have associated behavior. Typically encourages you to pass along with friends or share on social media. Could also influence you to engage in specific behavior or action. Ultimately, memes are trying to change how you behave or act in the world: ideal: must be meaningfully connected to a larger idea. Has to have some big picture or philosophical ideology that it is connected to. Example: charlie bit my finger video- most viewed on youtube. Represents something about siblings that have a powerful bond even when there is conflict. Like warner on circulation and publics/counterpublics: are people paying attention and as long as they are it has meaningful power. They create social space and facilitate connections. Memes perform culture and influence behavior, not just ideology.
