There are many different definitions of communication, and people in our field operate in using different definitions of communication. Intrapersonal communication has to do with how individuals processes a message and the meaning they make- that"s cognition, thought, and perception. Because if we are going to be a scholarly and imperative field, this is the first step. Unfortunately, for now we can only define it to satisfy our needs. Each author of theory defines communication different because of conflict between the 7 issues. Example- if an author says communication involves achieving a goal, he believes that communication needs to be successful. The class definition: a social process in which individuals use symbols to establish and interpret meaning in their environment. Broadens our definition of meaning to allow different interpretations of what communication is. Transactional (barnlund, 1970: linear (or one way model): Get them through the 5 senses: non verbal is sent through sight.
