Species are hard to define because of the close similarities between individuals. If it"s hard to define species defining race is even more difficult. Defining what a species is problematic: no distinct boundaries between closely related species. Diff groups of individuals that: have different traits, that arise from different ancestral lineages, that lead to inability to mate and have offspring, with the understanding that closely related species are not completely separated. Environment determines which individuals will survive and reproduce based on their traits. Can change traits in a population over generations. Combines: mutations, reproductive success in pop, to determine pop traits. Consider a population of humans with this range of skin darkness: how would population change if very dark skinned people had most babies.
