BSCI 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Gill Raker, Whale Shark, Filter Feeder
Document Summary
Bsci207 - lecture 22 - nutrient assimilation in animals. Digest (break down into small molecules + waste) Grabs a big chunk of an animal or a whole animal. Many aquatic animals sift small food particles from the water. Mussels use gills to trap algal cells that are brought into digestive system. Gill rakers are skeletal elements, covered with ordinary epidermis, and not involved in gas exchange. Gill rakers are used to concentrate particulates for swallowing. Baleen whales have baleen to filter things out of water (don"t have tooth) The plates in the mouth can collect food objects the size of rice grains. Small food items accumulate on the inside of each fibrous mats. Can feed on > 3,600 kg/day of krill. Not all of the energy consumed gets incorporated into organism. Energy is lost at each step in the food chain. Algal cells (produce 10,000 energy units of biomass per month)
