Food readily available: relatively low cost to consumer. Food costs decreased to near 10% of budget. Health costs risen to near 20% of budget: more discretionary funds/stimulates economy. Many fewer hours of labor/unit of food today. Converts forage from marginal land and many industry by-products into human food. But while modern animal agriculture has solved the initial problem of food availability, it has also brought about concerns about the costs to the animals, i. e. welfare. A social and political movement with organizations and persons possessing a range of motivations, ideologies, and agendas. Modern animal agriculture (terms: factory farming, intensive confinement animal agriculture, industrial livestock production, concentrated animal feeding operations. Large scale operations: thousands of animals, high technology & less labor. About 10 billion: about 9 billion of which are birds. Having to do with the total life experiences of an animal. Inclusive of factors related to genes, production and reproduction, physiology, health, nutrition, behavior, and mind.
