PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Short-Term Memory, Oral Stage, Genital Stage
Document Summary
Structure of personality: conscious-things that we are aware of, unconscious-things that we are unaware of, preconscious-the in-between. Wanted to explain personality structure, how it develops, what happens when it goes wrong and how to fix it. Frued was the most influential psychologist because so many theories stemmed off of his. Id=the pleasure principle (wants to gratify its own desires and influences), is something you are born with, similar to a spoiled child and is driven by sex and aggression (unconscious) Superego=guilt, conscientiousness, formed early in childhood with a sense of right and wrong- morality. Ego=reality principle, decides between super ego and id, executive personality, is more practical, ego must be strongest for one to maintain their mental health. If the superego is out of control we are highly anxious or depressed. Ego and superego are in the preconscious. Defense mechanism=unsconscious psychological way to prevent id based thoughts/urges from. Oral stage (0-1 yr)-find pleasure from mouth.
