Document Summary

Habituation: decrease in attention to a repeatedly presented stimuli. Dishabituation: renewed attention after habituation, caused by presentation of a new stimulus. Occurs early in life (by 9 mo can discriminate btwn men & women faces) May take a newborn 5 to 10 min to habituate & a 6 mo ld only 30 seconds: when they habituate & then dishabituate, babies demonstrate that they can discriminate btwn objects. But we do not know what cues they used to identify the perceptual difference. Processes of memory (short-term) involved here as well. Substage i (birth to 1mo) - practices reflex actions. Substage 2 (1 to 4 mo) - engages in primary circular reactions. Substage 3 (4 to 8 mo) - uses visually guided reaching for exploration. Substage 4 (8 to 12 mo) - shows 1st signs of intelligence by using intentional behavior to solve problems. Substage 5 (12 to 18 mo - engages in tertiary circular reactions.
