PSY 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Central Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
Stress: stress effects individuals both psychologically and physiologically, to best understand stress, we will first look at how stress affects people physiologically. Physiology of the stress response: once stress is perceived, sympathetic division of the ans is activated & mobilizes the body"s resources, flight or fight response: the body is readying to either attack or escape. Physiology of the stress response: the ans can be activated through 2 routes, direct activation of the sympathetic division, which activates the adrenal medulla. Defining stress: how do we define stress", as a stimulus, as a response, as an interaction. Measuring stress: researchers need to measure stress so they can understand how stress affects disease, stress can be measured in two broad ways, physiological measures, self-report measures. Physiological measures of stress: physiological measures of stress include measurements of, blood pressure, heart rate, galvanic skin response, respiration rate, advantages: reliable and direct, disadvantages: process may produce stress itself; expensive.
