PSY 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Negative Relationship, Relate, Prenatal Care
Document Summary
Can"t ever say that x caused y if you"re only looking at correlaion. Third variable problem: the idea that a relaionship may be driven by the acion of some unmeasured third variable. Ex: negaive relaionship between income and amount of hair. Age relates to both variables when you control for age, that correlaion goes away. Ex: aggression and violent tv viewing. (playing violent video games, also). Ex: the evils of facebook: greater ime spent on facebook predicts greater facebook-related jealousy of romanic partners (muise et al. , 2009) Facebook use is related to lower undergraduate/graduate gpa, less ime spent studying (kirschner & karpinski, 2010) Couldn"t it equally be that people that are jealous are stalking their signiicant others in o. Facebook: we could say facebook relates to these things, but we can"t say facebook caused these things. To establish causal relaionship, you need control: must show variaion in one variable could only be due to inluence of another variable.
