A formal organization structure that directs and coordinates the efforts of the people involved in various organizational tasks. Is a set of hierarchical arrangements of organization"s parts, based on division of labor and authority. The authority resides in the office, position, or status; not a person. The authority associated with a particular job in the hierarchy remain essentially the same regardless of the person occupying the position: ideal type of bureaucracy. A model against which a real, operating social phenomenon can be compared. Max weber: an ideal type of bureaucracy has six main components, which are essential to efficient functioning. Each job is designed to meet a specific need. Run by a chain of command; all officials are accountable to those. Largest number of workers are at the bottom of the pyramid". The organization, its files and equipment, set apart from workers" personal lives. Also known as separation of person and organization".
