Document Summary

Essential (most needed, ie. will die soonest if you don"t have: major component of all living things. Excretion of waste through urine & fecal water. Extracellular fluid (40% of the total body of water, outside of cells) Body controls amount of water in these 2 areas by regulating particle concentrations (ions, mainly) Ions = electrolytes (charged particles, water is attracted to charged particles) Best to think of the process of moving ions with water following: sodium (na+) - sign positive charge. Deficiency signs - muscles cramps, apathy, loss of appetite. Dietary sources - processed foods (75% of us intake), table salt, soft water (ca replaced with na), soy sauce & mono-sodium-glumate (msg) Loss mainly occurs from skin & stomach (sweating & vomiting) People on a very low sodium diet due to special diets (kidney disease, hypertension & heart disease) Excess sweating: potassium (k+) - single positive charge. Deficiency signs - muscle weakness, confusion, change in heart rate.
