Reasons why many experts believe a permanent shift to spanish in any part of the u. s is unlikely: Today"s immigrants are shifting to english at least as fast as ever before. Numbers of spanish speakers has been increasing due to continuing immigration, not due to long-term maintenance of spanish. Most u. s children (2nd) of spanish-speaking immigrants are english dominant. French in quebec, catalan in catalonia (spain), german in south tyrol (italy) Permanent survival of these regional languages (and many others) once seemed unlikely to many observers; now it seems assured for the foreseeable future. To the extent that it is true that english is the language of opportunity in the u. s most immigrants (and/or their children) will learn english willingly. Could english ever stop being the (only/primary) language of opportunity in part(s) of the. --some entire states were to become majority spanish speaking. --us spanish speakers were to become increasingly successful and confident.
