GLY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Kinetic Energy, Hydrogen Bond
Document Summary
Large volumes of material move downslope under the pull of gravity. Gravity is the immediate power behind the agents of erosion. But gravity can also accomplish major changes working largely by itself, without the help of any erosive agent. Rain falls, water flows, ice glides, wind blows, and waves break under the influence of gravity. Gravity causes the downward and outward movements of landslides and the downward collapse of subsiding ground. Given enough time, gravity would pull all the land into the seas. Before an object can move downslope it must first overcome friction and inertia. Inertia is the tendency of a body to remain at rest until an external force is applied. (object at rest will stay at rest unless an unequal force acts upon it) Friction is the resistance to motion of a body that keeps it from moving over another body.
