Is there a difference between sex and gender: yes, sex is a person"s biology, gender is how a person learns to perform based on their sex. Men have historically held more social power than have women. Often times men will interrupt women rather than women will interrupt men. Builds off the tendencies of little boys and little girls to play in sex-segregated groups. Within these groups, boys and girls develop different communication rules and norms: like boys shouldn"t cry. Boys and girls learn to value different things. Boys learn to value hierarchy, power & competitiveness. Girls learn to value sharing, cooperation, and relational harmony. So what does this mean for communication between men and women: men and women both need to understand and appreciate each other"s communication styles. Men and women don"t differ in values, as suggested by different culture theory.
