Document Summary

Theatre is created to elicit a response. Community is created when an audience fathers together at one time, for one purpose. In ancient greece- audiences had social interaction, ate and drank during the theatrical event. In the middle ages, theatre was a community affair. Christian cycle plays, which depicted stories from the bible were projects that engaged the whole town. During shakespearean times the audience drank, cheered, booed, hissed and threw food at the performers. A style like any other form of theatre. Voices are still louder than we normally speak, everything still facing the audience, sets are still painted and fake. Realism came about as a combination of things: *the writings and findings of charles darwin (presented humans ad objects of scientific study) *the advancement of stage lighting, first with gas, then with electricity. Allowed actors to move back into the set and not have to stand in the front the whole time.
