PY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Terri Schiavo Case, Persistent Vegetative State, Circadian Rhythm
Document Summary
Consciousness is our subjective awareness of the world. Can"t know if we all experience the world in the same way. Cocktail party phenomenon: can focus our attention. Shadowing: we can ignore less important information, still perceive it unconsciously, let"s go throw stones at the bank! . We can miss large changes in our environment. Can be distracted even from important information: texting and driving, laptops in class. Subliminal perception: processing information without conscious awareness. The global workplace model: different awareness in different areas. Persistent vegetative state: terri schiavo, no conscious whatsoever. Awareness turns off, but brain remains active. Insomnia (and pseudo insomnia fall asleep and dream they are awake) Sleep apnea (kind of stop breathing in their sleep) Rem behavior disorder (fairly rare cuts off awareness that stops you from moving, so people act out their dreams) Deprivation causes deficits in mood, cognition, attention, memory, and immune system and death. Freud: repressed unconscious conflicts: no scientific evidence, common themes.
