Obsessions- persistent intrusive thought, idea, impulse, or image that causes anxiety. Compulsions- strong urge to perform repetitive, ritualistic behaviors (e. g. checking or hand washing) or mental acts (e. g. mentally repeating words in a certain order. Caused by exposure to trauma (death, threats of death, or sexual violation) or witnessing trauma to another person. Re-experiencing the event in nightmares or daytime flashbacks . Negative changes in mood or cognition (difficulty experiencing full range of emotions, detachment from others, loss of interest in activities, problems remembering event) Changes in arousal & reactivity causing sleep problems, exaggerated startle response, bursts of anger, reckless/self-destructive behavior. Depressed mood: exaggerated & prolonged feelings of sadness, hopeless, grief, guilt, & low feelings of self-worth. Mania: ceaseless energy, exaggerated feelings of elation, unrealistic self-esteem, racing thoughts or anger, anxiety, extreme irritability. Suicidal ideation, at least a passive wish to die, is frequently present. Classical symptoms: cycles of mania & depression separated by months.
