Most evolutionarily ancient structures at the bottom (present in primitive animals & perform basic functions) Cerebellum- involved in balance, coordination and some voluntary movement. Descriptor of the hindbrain and midbrain, minus the cerebellum, and including the thalamus. Injury to higher areas of the forebrain = life is difficult, not impossible. Controls movement primarily through coordination of sensory inputs. Loss of balance is a problem with visual-spatial perception not motor skills. Seat of: thought, emotion, personality, memory, intelligence, language, consciousness. Each hemisphere receives information from, and conveys information to, the opposite side of the body. Corpus callosum: bundle of neurons allows right hemisphere to communicate with left. Seat of basic drives such as hunger, thirst, & sex. Hippocampal damage creates anterograde amnesia (inability to form new memories) Creates understanding of one"s own emotions & emotions of others. Damage = inability to recognize & interpret your emotions or respond to situations with appropriate emotions.
