Environmental: low socioeconomic status, urban areas, dysfunctional families, childhood abuse, malnutrition. Characterized by disturbances in identity, affect and impulse control: instability. More than twice as common in women as in men. May have an environmental component as a strong relationship exists between the disorder and trauma or abuse: 70-80% have experience physical or sexual abuse or observed some kind of extreme violence.
