The death of the whig party: 1852 the whigs attempted to appeal to immigrant votes, and it ended in disaster, the whigs were divided internally more deeply than the democrats, even before. The whigs managed to pull off a trifecta in 1852, losing anti-immigrant votes, pro-slavery voters, and anti-slavery voters. The collapse was so dramatic by 1854, it ceased to exist: know-nothings . Grew from secret anti-immigrant clubs in northern cities. Were very successful and got a lot of people elected to state legislature, and dominated many states in the north. Were emerging as a national electoral force: 1854, the expansion of slavery was back into full force in regards to politics. The birth of the republican party: senator stephen douglas. Didn"t care that much about slavery or expansion of it.
