Became a great symbol for american freedom and confirmed man"s ability to conquer nature itself. 8 times as many americans working in factory in comparison to 40 years before. Created a mechanical reaper that greatly increased wheat production and saved time. Could harvest 12 acres a day which was a vast improvement from before. Steam power allowed for factories to be placed in places other than rivers and allowed for the use of cheap labor in cities. Resulted in a huge population growth due to the connectivity between cities, factories, labor, etc. 1860 there were still large amounts of farmers, but urban living doubled to around 25 percent. Over 5 million immigrants came in 40 years, coming from either germany or ireland.
