From igneous rock lecture: mainly focus on the extrusive environment. Why should we care about volcanoes: volcanic eruptions emit huge quantities of gas and debris; material in atmosphere can change our climate, ash produced by volcanic eruptions leads to very fertile soil, also often situated near coastlines. Lots of people live near them: beautiful and interesting, but also very unpredictable and dangerous. Pelee: martinique, lesser antilles, erupted: 1902, 28,000 killed largest number of casualties from volcanic eruption this century.
