Document Summary
Cj 300 - lecture 8: routine activities theory (ch. Goes hand-in-hand with rational choice theory and deterrence theory. Routine activities = recurrent and prevalent activities that provide for basic population and individual needs . 3 main variables that must converge in space and time (happen at the same time and place): Anybody who wants something from you and is willing to engage in criminal behavior to get it. You make a rational choice to do this. Does not need to be someone with a badge. All you need is one person in the vicinity to scare away a motivated offender. Ex: a stranger walking by when someone wants to rob you. Sending your police units to where you think the crime will occur (the dangerous routine activities) If you get a run down area (or badly vandalized), it"s a magnet for crime. So vacant areas of the city are more likely to get criminal activity.
