Document Summary

Films: made directly from a polymer solution by melt-extrusion or casting the solution onto a hot drum (similar to fiber spinning solutions) The two most common film materials (vinyl & polyurethane) are similar in appearance, but vary by care requirements: Vinyl wash, stiffens when dry-cleaned/exposed to cold temps. Polyurethane washable & dry-cleanable, remain soft in cold weather. Uses: shoes, shower curtains, upholstery, & bags. Plain films firm, dense, & uniform; impermeable to air & water (micropores allow air & water vapor); excellence soil/stain resistance; good deformation recovery ex) latex, vinyl, chloroprene, nitrile. Expanded films spongier, softer, & plumper; not as strong or abrasion resistant; impermeable to air & water (micropores allow air & water vapor) Solution is extruded through narrow slits into warm air/cast onto a revolving drum. Waterproof, impermeable, stiff, low cost, soil resistant, & nonfibrous. Poor drapeability & are weak unless supported by a fabric back.
