Document Summary
Manufactured fiber any fiber derived by a process of manufacture from a substance that at any point in the process is not a fiber. Two types of manufactured fibers: regenerated & synthetic. Robert hooke suggested the idea of squeezing liquid through an aperture in 1664. First manufactured fiber was introduced in 1889. Manufactured fibers were aimed at people who couldn"t afford the expensive natural fibers. Differences in manufactured fibers: appearance & hand are not enough, chemistry is where there are differences, generic names are used, direct end-uses of fibers & fashions. Starting material is a polymer, either supplied by nature or manufactured from petrochemicals. By application of heat (melting) or use of a solvent (dissolving) The spinning solution is referred to as dope. Spinning steps all methods are based on the same 3 general steps: preparing a viscous dope (thick solution) or a melt, extrusion through spinneret to form fiber, solidifying the fiber (cooling/evaporation/precipitation, drawing (optional)
