Usually finished or cut edge with serging or pressing open. Plain seam (ssa) greater tendency to grin, non-bulky, easy to alter, inexpensive to produce, should be pressed open. Occur only at edges, no visible stitches, not visible inside the garment, used mainly at the outer edges of necklines, collars, and cuffs, problems with bulk (at least 4 plies of fabric) Men - heavy equipment (6lb+ iron) pressing, cutting. Lapped seams more casual appearances than ss always have topstitching good for difficulty shaped pieces ex. jeans.
