Document Summary

If it can be separated by a physical process- it is a mixture. If it cannot be separated by a physical process. If it can be broken down into simpler substances by a chemical reaction it is a compound. If it cannot be broken down into simpler substances it is an element. A physical change changes the physical state of the substance without changing its composition. A chemical change converts one substance into another: reactants are the starting material, products are the ending. Reactants are on the left of the arrow. Products are on the right of the arrow. Coefficients show the number of molecules of a given element/compound that react or are formed. A balanced equation has the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equations. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. Combination: joining of two or more reactants to make a single product.
