Began as a result of lingering tension from wwi, economic upheaval, and the. 1939 german invasion of poland (growing socialist group under hitler) Entire period early 20th century artists reacting ways we have never seen before, many new movements happening one right after another. Art during this time is considered the avant-garde which means artists were ahead of their time, rejecting classicism. Emerged in 1905 at salon d" automne (fall exhibit)
