PSY 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Social Dilemma, The Rub, Psy
Document Summary
Social dilemma- a conflict in which the most beneficial action for an individual, if chosen by most people, will have harmful effects on everyone. What is best for individuals is not always best for the group as a whole. As first, people acted for the good of all; more than 75% paid for the first installment. As w many social dilemmas, however, people eventually acted in their own self-interest, to the detriment of all. Prisoner"s dilemma: on each trial, two people have to choose one of two options without knowing what the other person will chose. The number of points they will win depends on the options chosen by both people. Many people begin by choosing y (safest choice). The rub is that both players will probably think this way, ensuring that both sides lose. To find a solution that is desirable to both parties, people must trust each other.
