Extended family generally consist of 3-4 generations of related people who are living within the same enclosed compound or in the same apartment complex. Common in third world countries and rural industrialized countries. Common among new immigrants in industrial countries. Special type of extended family arrangement exists among the nayar of southern india called tarawads. Consists of different lineal generatins of women and their brothers and all the children of the women. Marriage among the nayar is a brief formality. Once married, the husband might never return. Women and children rarely know or care about their real fathers.
