ENV-0007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Municipal Solid Waste, Keurig, Precautionary Principle
Document Summary
By 2040- expected to deplete our fossil fuels below 5% of what they actually are. In the next 25-30 years, we need to change our live style in a sustainable manner or find a new energy source to replace fossil fuels. Drilling for oil in the arctic national wildlife refuge: northern alaskan coast, 19 million acres of protected land- millions of oil under that land. Only 6% difference in how much oil that would need to be imported. The parable of the plimsoll line: conceptual idea to use/ efficiency, massive shipping containers with painted lines on them. Internalizing externalities- allows you to evaluate how your purchase influence/ impact the environment. Efficiency use- how efficient are you in using those resources, and do you consider the environmental impact when you make that purchase. Graphic- carbon tax- how do we offset the potential impact. On a market based incentive, the base line can fluctuate.
