California: (cid:862)(cid:373)egadrought(cid:863)-10+ years of drought like conditions, expanding throughout california. Ogallala aquifer: ground water, ground water discharge- water comes back up- springs, ground water recharge- water is taken back up in the soil, quite large- not confined in one state boundary. Surface waters: 60% of precipitation evaporates or is taken up by plants. Water is used for agriculture, power, etc: 40% is then left to run off into the ocean, where humans capture a portion of it. We usually track the water before it meets ocean: runoff varies between continents. Dependent on the soil content (ability to percolate, moisture, etc. : access to water varies within a continent or country. Watershed: area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it and goes to the same place. Continental divide: us- precipitation on one side of the country will go to the atlantic, precipitation on the other side will go to the pacific.
