Students received 3 handouts: the introductory paper skeleton, the literature review. Worksheet, and the article slim majority of americans think death penalty applied. Fairly in this country by jeffrey m. jones. Students are provided 3 articles (jones article was handed out, other two articles by stack and elisworth/ gross available on class website as pdf files) and asked to identify 4 major themes in the articles. Theme 1: effect of death penalty support (dps) on law and policy. Subtheme 1: supreme court cases on capital punishment. Subtheme 2: the role of dps in presidential campaigns. Capital punishment (cp) became a major issue when dukakis became the democratic nominee, he was the last nominee to be opposed to cp, now considered an un-electable position. There were 2 key cases in the 1970"s, students are to find what they are, when they occurred, and what the ruling was. Theme 2: trends over time in dps.
