Meritocracy- social stratification based on personal merit (ability) Social mobility- change in position within a social hierarchy. Caste- individuals typically have the same level of income and education as their parents. Class- individuals have the opportunity to increase education or income. Conspicuous consumption- buying and using products because of the statement they make about social position. Davis-moore thesis- social stratification exists because there are beneficial consequences for the operation of society. Different jobs within society require different levels of skill and therefore require different levels of incentives (wages, benefits) Ensures people perform most needed jobs (doctors, lawyers, judges, politicians etc. )
