The rise of islam: the prophet muhammad. 570 ce - born as a member of the quraysh tribe. Leaves for mecca and becomes a merchant. 610 ce - night of power and excellence : when he receives a message from allah. 613 ce - begins public preaching in mecca. 626 ce - muslims began kicking jews out of medina: right after closing of talmud, some jews are killed during this period (changes very quickly) 630 ce - initially persecuted, muslims gain control of mecca. 632 ce - muhammad dies, and their is controversy over his succession: expansion under the umayyad caliphate. Rapid expansion of islamic rule (after muhammad"s death) Under the caliphate, muslims gain control of lands reaching from east of persia to spain: jewish life under muslim rulers. Initially, muhammad hopes for jewish conversion to islam. Doesn"t happen, for the most part, jews enjoy a privileged status under muslim rule (dhimmis)
