Rapid expansion of islamic rule (after muhammad"s death) Under the caliphate, muslims gain control of lands reaching from east of persia to spain: jewish life under muslim rulers. Initially, muhammad hopes for jewish conversion to islam. Doesn"t happen, for the most part, jews enjoy a privileged status under muslim rule (dhimmis)
