Teratogen- any environmental agent that causes damage during the prenatal period. Sensitive periods of development- a time that is optimal for certain capacities to emerge and in which the individual i especially responsive to environmental influences. Fas (fetal alcohol syndrome)- a congenital syndrome caused by excessive consumption of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy, characterized by retardation of mental development and of physical growth, particularly of the skull and face of the infant. Rh factor incompatibility- a condition that arises when the rh protein is present in the fetus"s (cid:271)lood (cid:271)ut (cid:374)ot the (cid:373)other"s causing the mother to build up antibodies. If these e(cid:374)ter the fetus"s s(cid:455)ste(cid:373), the(cid:455) destro(cid:455) red blood cells, reducing the oxygen supply to organs and tissues. Mental retardation, miscarriage, heart damage, and infant death can occur. Prepared childbirth- an educational approach to labor and delivery in which the parents are specially prepared for the event.
