Attention is the focusing of mental processes. Increase in cognitive control of attention; less impulsivity. Use cues and gestures for important material. Focus on active learning and be aware of individual differences. Use media and technology to make learning enjoyable. Is the retention of information over time. Retrieval- taking information out of storage, reconstruct vs reproduce. Rehearsal- consistent repetition of information over time (ex 1+1=2) Constructing images- mental images (ex; venn diagrams) Attention- concentrate and focus vs divided attention. Elaboration- adds to distinctiveness (ex; making something about you) Deep processing- deeper processing, better memory (ex; giving meaning) Organization- aided by chunking (ex; easier to encode/ retrieve with a path to follow) Selective attention: focusing on a specific aspect of experience while ignoring other irrelevant aspects.
