PSYC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Explicit Memory, Hindsight Bias, Anatomical Terms Of Location
Document Summary
Internal record or representation of some prior event or experience. Constructive process- organizing and shaping of information during processing, storage and retrieval of memories (not a videotape - constructed) Getting information in, processing mental representation into memory system. Sensory memory- relatively large capacity but duration is only a few seconds. Short term memories- the capacity to remember something over a short retention interval. Long term memories- the capacity to remember something over long periods of time. Declarative- deals with information that can be expressed (which is usually done with words). Semantic- makes it possible for organisms to acquire, store, and use information about the world in which they live. Episodic- personally experienced events, the episodes in our lives (possibly unique to humans from evolution) Potentially confusing (you don"t know how/that you know something) Procedural memory- knowing how to perform a procedure. Not your knowledge about the procedure- your ability to perform it.
