Border expansion across the united states caused political tensions and clashes. Farmers made the most patriotic, hardworking citizens and thought that farming. Jeffersonians idolized farming in its own right but they recognized that agriculture would undergird stable national development and wealth would be linked to trade and commerce. Northwest, southwest, and new states population moved well beyond the eastern seaboard. 1789-1824 new states joined the united states in waves as the expanding. New states, ohio, indiana and illinois had a reflective mixture of regional cultures. Virginians moved into kentucky and tennessee after slavery was prohibited in that sometimes conflicted. James tallmadge jr. amended the missouri statehood legislation to ban further introduction of slaves there and to gradually emancipate slaves who already lived in the territory. Balance between free and slave states is in congress. Missouri would be a slave state and maine would be a free state. March 1820, congress approved the missouri compromise resolutions.
