Used to take up an entire room. Computers used to be used mainly as calculators. Contains many users: many terminals connected to it, multi-user system. Everyone uses a computer now-a-days: fifth generation. Expected to have a permanent life: even though nothing does, primary storage devices. Ram: holds currently active programs and data. Volatile: when you turn it off, the memory is gone. Does(cid:374)(cid:859)t hold (cid:373)e(cid:373)or(cid:455) per(cid:373)a(cid:374)e(cid:374)tl(cid:455: difference between primary and secondary devices. Boot up a pc: checks the memory of the computer. Hardware checks: boot up chip in software just for functions of booting up the computer, then it starts up. Executable file on the hard drive (c-drive) The software puts the software onto the hard drive so that it can begin to run: a computer that lives on the hard drive, when clicked it starts up. Start typing and the information goes into the ram. Only once you save the document does it go to the hard drive.
