Document Summary

Most of the anatomy of the digestive system is covered during lab. Be sure to review your notes from lab. The nutrients present in the food you ingest consists of macromolecules (review your notes from general biology or read chapter 2 of seeley"s) that are too large for the cells of your digestive tract to absorb. They are also too large and in the wrong form to be used by the body"s cells. The functions of the digestive system are to provide nutrients in usable form and to remove indigestible wastes. The alimentary canal (digestive tract) is the tube through which the food and indigestible materials pass. It extends from the oral orifice to the anus. The term gastrointestinal tract refers to the stomach and small and large intestines. Accessory organs aid digestion and generally lie outside the alimentary canal but are essential to digestion. Most of them secrete enzymes or other chemicals that aid digestion.
