Core temperature may drop so low that cns function stops. Hypothermia is decreased body temperature due to excessive loss of body heat. Chemical reaction rates decrease with decreased temperature and may reach a level that does not support life. When the core temperature has dropped low enough, cns function stops. Lowered temperature also lowers oxygen requirements, which improves chances of survival during drowning. Therapeutic hypothermia can be used clinically during open heart surgery or after heart attack to improve chances of recovery by limiting damage due to oxygen deprivation. A young man was playing roller hockey on a hot summer day (temperature ~ 99 of). He had forgotten his water bottle and didn"t want to share with his teammates. Between periods he was feeling a bit nauseated and somewhat week. In the middle of the second period, he suddenly collapsed. His sister who had some emt training rushed to his side. She found that his skin was warm and dry.
