16th century was a period of intense political and military turmoil. Spain extended its territory to austria, germany, and italy. A period of fundamental religious change- reformation and counter reformation. Mannerism emerged in 1520s in rome among elite literary circles, a response to high. Mannerism derived from italian maneria (style or manners) a style marked by artifice and unnatural style. Mannerists responded to a shift in patronage: obscure iconography and personal taste. Artists catered to patrons that were more interested in their tastes. Features of mannerism (not all of the features need to be checked off for the artwork to be considered a mannerist piece of art) Human body often elongated, exaggerated, elegant, in twisted poses. Less emphasis on classical portions, balance, symmetry, and rational composition. Less on expressing clear narrative and revealing inner emotions of characters. Jesus" body is presented to the viewers. The cross is missing from the painting. Difficult position to hold jesus in that way.
