10/18/16: culture change-processes/events that create permanent changes in traditions, practices and/or beliefs. Social organizations boomed because people could now get themselves there. Size of average community grew-urban sprawl: acculturation & assimilation- the large scale culture change that occurs when 2 or more cultures meet face to face. Example: the impact of the extermination of the buffalo on american indians living on the great plains. Example: in california, in the mid-1800s, euro-americans paid a price or bounty for each indian killed, got paid for each body. Example: requiring african slaves to give up their language & religion. Directed change- the intentional imposition of change by one culture on another. Example: general allotment act broke up communally owned tribal lands into individually held parcels to give out to settlers to start farming, to start feeding the new america. Rebellion and revolution- armed opposition or refusal to cooperate with parties in power and/or authority.
